Anglo American: Youth Development Programme 2026 / 2027

Anglo American is one of the world’s largest mining companies, and its Kolomela Mine in the Northern Cape is a major iron ore operation and one of the region’s biggest employers. Through its Youth Development Programmes, Anglo American brings unemployed young South Africans into structured, multi-year development pathways that combine practical workplace exposure with formal skills training — this is one of several such programmes it runs across its South African operations each year.

The Processing Development Programme at Kolomela Mine is now open for applications. If you meet the minimum requirements and are interested in joining, you’re encouraged to apply.

This opportunity gives you the chance to gain practical experience in your chosen field of study while making a real contribution to the business, as part of your ongoing development. The programme is full-time and runs for approximately 3 years, equipping you with the skills needed to drive your own career forward in the mining and minerals processing sector.

Who This Programme Suits

This programme suits Grade 12/N3 leavers with a strong Maths or Maths Literacy background who are currently unemployed and not studying, and who are looking for a long-term, structured route into the mining industry rather than a short-term placement. Because it runs for roughly 3 years, it’s better suited to candidates ready to commit to an extended development pathway than those seeking quick, short-term work.

Requirements

  • Must have Grade 12 / N3 or equivalent — with Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy
  • Must have a valid South African Driver’s Licence
  • Must provide proof of residential address
  • Must be medically and physically fit (RFA)
  • Must complete the LPCAT assessment
  • Must be between 18 and 35 years old
  • Must be currently unemployed and not studying

Application Tips for Youth Development Programmes

  • The LPCAT (Learning Potential Computerised Adaptive Test) is a standard screening step for mining sector programmes — it’s not a knowledge test but a reasoning/aptitude assessment, so getting a good night’s sleep beforehand matters more than studying content.
  • Mining companies verify residential proximity to the mine closely, since these programmes rarely include relocation support — make sure your proof of address matches the area the mine recruits from.
  • The medical and physical fitness requirement (RFA — Certificate of Fitness) is assessed by an occupational health practitioner, not your regular GP — only apply once you understand where this can be arranged near you.
  • Since the programme is a 3-year commitment, be ready to explain in your application or interview why you’re choosing a long-term development path over shorter-term work — this genuinely matters to shortlisting panels for these programmes.
