Woolworths: Customer Assistant Job Opportunities

Woolworths is one of South Africa’s largest retail groups, known for its food, clothing, and homeware stores across the country. Its Corporate Stores division employs thousands of till and floor staff nationally, and Customer Assistant roles are consistently among its highest-volume entry points into retail — making this a good target for candidates without formal retail experience who want to break into the sector.

Come join Woolworths as a Customer Assistant and be the friendly face that gives exceptional service at our store tills. You will be based at our Corporate Stores, where you’ll greet customers warmly, process transactions efficiently, and promote our loyalty programme and services.

This role needs attention to detail, strong communication, and personal discipline. You will help keep the till area safe and organised, and play an important role in reducing shrinkage by following store policy. Woolworths offers a dynamic and inclusive workplace with opportunities for growth and development. Flexible shifts and relevant experience are welcome.

If you’re customer-focused, reliable, and eager to grow your skills in a leading retail environment — apply today and build your career with Woolworths.

Who This Role Suits

This role suits Grade 12 leavers or anyone looking for their first structured retail job, since prior experience is a preference, not a requirement. It particularly suits candidates who can commit to flexible or rotating shifts, including weekends and peak trading periods, since till operations run around the store’s full trading hours rather than fixed 9-to-5 schedules.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet customers warmly and make sure they have a positive and friendly shopping experience at the till
  • Process all till transactions accurately, following company policy, including different payment methods
  • Promote Woolworths’ loyalty programme and additional services like utility bill payments and airtime sales
  • Keep the till area clean, safe, and well-organised, following all shopkeeping discipline
  • Check pricing accuracy by comparing scanned items against shelf tickets and fix any discrepancies
  • Reduce shrinkage by following loss prevention procedures and report any irregularity or suspicious activity quickly
  • Show basic product knowledge to help customers and support promotional events and special store campaigns
  • Stay calm and efficient under pressure, managing time well during busy periods to keep operations running smoothly
  • Show honesty, reliability, and professionalism in all interactions, and contribute positively to the team environment
  • Attend team meetings and follow company policy for attendance, dress code, and hygiene standards

Requirements

  • Must have at least a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent NQF level
  • Previous experience in retail or customer service is an advantage but not mandatory
  • Must be available and flexible to work different shifts as the store requires
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills to assist and engage with customers
  • Must have attention to detail and be able to handle till transactions accurately and efficiently
  • Must show honesty, reliability, and self-discipline — including following dress code and punctuality policy
  • Must have basic selling skills and product knowledge to promote services and the loyalty programme
  • Must be able to stay calm under pressure, organise work well, and deliver excellent customer service
  • Must have basic numeracy and literacy skills to manage till operations and customer interactions properly

Application Tips for Retail Customer Assistant Roles

  • Woolworths’ till systems require accuracy under time pressure — mentioning any cash-handling, POS, or customer-facing experience in your CV (even informal, like a school tuck shop or family business) strengthens your application significantly.
  • Retail shortlisting for high-volume roles often moves quickly — apply as soon as you see the listing rather than waiting, since positions can close once enough applications come in.
  • Be honest about your shift availability upfront; stores prioritise candidates who can genuinely commit to weekend and holiday-period shifts, which is when retail staffing needs peak.
  • Dress neatly and arrive early if invited for an interview — Woolworths’ brand is built on presentation standards, and this is often assessed informally from the moment you walk in.
