Department of Transport
Closing Date: 09 October 2026
The Department of Transport has internship programs every year: graduate internships, Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements for students who are still studying, and graduate internships specific to public transport, each with its own way to apply. GIS (Geographic Information Systems) internships like this one are usually in the department’s planning or infrastructure units, where location data is used for planning transport networks, drawing road maps, and monitoring infrastructure across South Africa.
Who This Internship Is For
This is for graduates or students who have studied GIS, geography, surveying or spatial sciences and are ready to deal with the document-heavy process that is common in government jobs. Since this is a graduate or WIL internship and not a permanent job, it is especially for people who are just starting out in their careers and want to gain government-sector experience in transport planning data.

Important Notes

- Clearly state the job and Reference Number you’re applying for, along with a detailed CV
- Since many applications are received, only those shortlisted will be contacted
- If you don’t hear back within six months after the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful
- If applying for more than one field of study, send a separate Z83 form and all required documents for each one to the correct address
Requirements
- You must have completed the academic requirements for the field of study advertise, proof is only needed from shortlisted candidates during the interview
- All positions are subject to verification of your education, past experience, citizenship, references, and security background.
- Anyone who has done an internship before will not be considered.
- Anyone who has done an internship at another government department or state organization will be removed.
Application Tips for Government Graduate Internships
- Use the most recent version of the Z83 form, older versions are often rejected, so download it directly from a Public Service Department website instead of using a saved copy
- Since GIS jobs are very specific, make sure your CV includes any experience with GIS software (like QGIS or ArcGIS), even from a class or personal project. This is what shortlisters look for first in a technical internship like this
- Check carefully that you’re sending your application to the correct email address for the internship type (graduate internship vs WIL vs public transport, sending it to the wrong address is a common reason for being excluded
- Because six months of no response means your application was unsuccessful, don’t wait on this one before applying elsewhere, keep applying to other opportunities at the same time
